Introduction to Prism and MVVM in WPF |
| Presentation Overview:
|
WPF is a powerful UI Technology that allows for good development of Rich UI Applications. The way WPF works allows for the building of Composite and Theme-able applications when using the right Frameworks and Patterns. Prism is Microsoft’s Composite Application Guidance for allowing us to build modular applications that also have the possibility of supporting Third-Party plugin development techniques. MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) is a UI Design Pattern that allows us to adhere to Separation of Concerns when building applications. This allows us to have a good separation of Visual and behavior development allowing for easier ways to include Designers into the development process. While Prism does not have to be done along with MVVM it provides some objects and techniques that help facilitate the MVVM Pattern. Tonights talk will be an introduction to modular development using Prism and Disconnected visual and behavior development using the MVVM design pattern. |

Mashing Up Virtual Earth 3D |
| Presentation Overview:
|
Virtual Earth 3D is a free service from Microsoft that allows you to view maps and other geodetic data in three dimensions. If you haven’t experienced this technology before, then visit maps.live.com and click the “3D” link in the toolbar above the map. While you might already know about this extremely cool feature, you might be surprised to learn that you can deeply leverage this powerful platform in a number of ways within both your web and desktop applications. In this presentation we will explore several different ways to “mash up” Virtual Earth 3D into your own applications. |

Introducing the New Architecture Tools in Visual Studio 2010 |
| Presentation Overview:
|
The Architecture tools in Visual Studio 2010 represent a complete departure from what was previously offered. Building on the popularity of the Class Designer, Dev 10 adds standard UML models (Class, Sequence, Activity, and Component) plus the Logical Class Designer and the Layer Diagram. In addition the Architect Explorer builds a graphical view of your code and dependencies allowing you to navigate your application’s source with ease.
In this presentation we’ll explore the various models, and how you can use them not only for new development, but how they can help you wrap your arms around existing code and aid in architectural refactoring. |

Migrating LINQ to SQL to the Entity Framework |
| Presentation Overview:
|
Session: Migrating from LINQ to SQL to the Entity Framework
With 3.5 SP1, Microsoft released two competing technologies to provide Object Relationship Mapping strategies over data - LINQ to SQL and the Entity Framework. Microsoft has indicated that, although they will continue to support both technologies, future enhancement efforts will be directed toward the Entity Framework. As a result, people who built applications over LINQ to SQL are faced with the challenge of moving them over to the Entity Framework to take advantage of future enhancements. In this session, we will explore the similarity and differences between the two technologies to help identify times when you should and should not migrate existing code bases. We'll focus on the common pitfalls that developers need to be aware of when moving between the technologies. We'll also look at architectual options you can make to make migration less painful. Additionally, we'll look at some of the functionality scheduled to be included in future versions of the Entity Framework which may influence decisions on making migrations. |
